Youtube is blocked so we can't view it in class. I use zamzar.com to download all sorts of movies from it to show later in school or put on my iPod. The legality of this I'm not sure about.
TeacherTube is cool because it's not blocked and I put my own movies there but most of the really good stuff is available on Youtube.
I've never spent much time on YouTube or even heard of TeacherTube before this course. After doing some exploring I found many interesting videos. I believe that I would use these in the classroom if I found a video that was relevant to the content that we were studying. I also think it would be really great if my students would create their own videos that we could post for other people. Before researching about video mail and YackPack I could have used this to post instructions and directions for my students that they could access online.
The only thing I thought of YouTube was how it was a waste of my kids time. After looking for actual things I may be able to use, I have changed my mind. There is some really neat stuff that can be used from both YouTube and TeacherTube. I only hope schools will allow access to these sites for teachers. Students probably wouldn't be trusted to look for "school purposes". These tools would be a big help to teaching students about certain things that can not be re-created in the classroom.
Before taking this class, I had not spent much time on You Tube and I had never used Teacher Tube. I like Teacher Tube, but I was surprised at some of the topics that there are not any videos to be found for. This really kind of surprised me. I like You Tube, but this is definitely a resource that would have to be monitored very closely if your students use it. However, I think that there are some great videos to that can be used in lesson plans. I think that videos are definitely a great way to enrich your lessons and a great way to make learning more fun and interesting for the students.
I think there are a lot of neat purposes for YouTube and TeacherTube. I don't think they are appropriate for children to search on at school, but if the teacher finds one that pertains to a lesson, then I think it is a great way to incorporate technology. Some of them are pretty humorous too!
I have used both TeacherTube and UTube to embed video in blogs and on Facebook as part of my Faculty Development initiatives. There are some great resources at both sites. Check out Leelefever's CommonCraft http://www.youtube.com/user/leelefever for the Plain English descriptions of tech tools. If it's blocked, you might try watching Social Bookmarking in Plain English or Photosharing in Plain English on my Medical Education blog.
My district blocks YouTube as well - however when I told our tech guy that it is an important element in my teaching he unblocked it from my teaching computer. Videos I share from both TeacherTube and YouTube in my art class includ viewing museums, current working artists, processes. If we are going to draw elephants we watch elephants. In my technology class we watch a huge variety of examples of stop-motion videos, tutorials, processes. I have a huge video selection, most purchased from teacher supply catalogs throughout the years. For the most part they are too long, boring, irrelevant to my needs. It is much more engaging to watch a 10 minute video that gets right to the point. A plus is to have students create their own tutorials or projects - they tend to take more pride in what they do if they know it will be seen outside the classroom doors.
Absolutely, I taught art, specifically photography and graphic design. Sure wish YouTube and TeacherTube would have been around. The money I could have saved buying videos and used for more important things like art supplies.
I think it's absolutely amazing how much information you can find on YouTube and TeacherTube. You can find a video about any subject basically. I hope that when I am a teacher, these sites are not blocked at my school because I could really see myself wanting to use a video (especially some of those found on TeacherTube) to help explain concepts to my students. If I am at a school where these sites are blocked, I will probably offer extra credit assignments in which students can watch a particular video at home and maybe do a short paper or quiz about it.
I think that TeacherTube can be a great tool in the classroom. I did not know that TeacherTube existed before this class, I knew of YouTube but I have not used it much in the past. I think that I will use TeacherTube in my classroom to help introduce new topics and give additional information to my students. I don't think students should be able to access YouTube in schools, there are too many negative and inappropriate videos that they can see.
I really like using YouTube and TeacherTube to find educational videos. I think it is a great resource to use. I think that by using YouTube and TeacherTube in your classroom it is a great way to incorporate technology and to engage your students in learning. I personally plan on using YouTube and TeacherTube in my classroom.
